Zainol and his Albino Crocodile
Zainol is a retired Malay fisherman living in the area known as Sungai Linggi, Malaysia.
He doesn't know how old his friend is but he says that he remembers seeing the white croc when he was very young.
Between Zainol's poor English and my worse Malaysian, he tells me how he whistles to the croc who then comes over to his boat and waits for his daily snout-scratch with a very occasional fish as reward.
Less than 100 metres from the bridge connecting the states of Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, this area is not so popular with tourists, local or foreign, so Zainol doesn't get much attention.
No does his friend.
Zainol hopes for the day when he can become friends with more of the local wild creatures that live in the sungai (river) and when he can earn a few more ringgit so that he can buy small gifts for his grandchildren.
I met Zainol because we were investigating options to create a tourism project around Syngai Linggi for the benefit of the diverse wildlife there and for the locals who were mostly sustenance fisherman and of sub-standard living conditions, even by their standards.
We finally created some very viable projects and made submissions to the state government for some preliminary funding.
Proposals rejected.
Please be patient Zainol, help is on its way.
You can help Zainol and his friends by buying these items, our profit from which is contributing to our projects.
